One Strange Night...
Jody and I were over at my mom's house watching the Braves lose when all of a sudden there were two loud booms that shook the house. We all jumped up and ran in different directions...Jody shouted "Tommy's (my wild brother) home!" Which sent Mom and I to the door...me to check on my car and her to actually check on Tommy. Jody, however, realized what was going on and ran outside.
A car had wrapped itself around a huge tree that separates my house from Grandmommy's house next door. Two teenagers pulled up, who had seen the whole thing and along with Jody, were running after two men running away from the accident! They kept yelling for them to come back, but the men (who obviously spoke little English) just shouted back, "It's okay, it's okay." They were long gone.
Meanwhile, Mom and I were both trying to get 911, but I was put on hold...not once, but 4 times! FOUR! The car was smoking and one guy was still in there...it was scary. My mom gave up and ran outside, frantically trying to pull the water hose to the car and made it 20 feet or so, about 30 feet short of the car. Very funny.
When I finally got up to the accident, I saw my stepgrandfather, standing in only his shorts, yelling at the driver who had finally gotten out of the car for driving so fast and almost killing people. The funniest thing of all was that the guy couldn't understand a word of English.
I tried to ask him if he had pain using the little Spanish I knew, but he was still hazed from the accident. When the cops got there, he admitted to having a few cerbezas.
This morning, I drove by to see what all had happened. Apparently the guy had been driving so fast, when he ran off the road before my grandparents house, he went airborne and landed 50 feet away and then slammed into the tree. It's a miracle no one died. |
